Description: Pseudomonas syringae pv. phaseolicola is the seed-borne causative agent of halo blight disease in Phaseolus vulgaris, the common bean. The combination of functional effector and resistance genes in races of Pseudomonas syringae pv. phaseolicola and cultivars of Phaseolus, respectively, determine the outcome of the plant-pathogen interaction. Classification of strains of Pseudomonas syringae pv. phaseolicola into races is based on their differential abilities to cause disease in diagnostic cultivars of Phaseolus. Pseudomonas syringae pv. phaseolicola (strain 1448A) belongs to the race 6 pathotype whose members are virulent on all Phaseolus vulgaris varieties examined.
