| Description: |
Bacillus cereus is a Gram-positive, spore-forming bacterium of the B.cereus group. It is closely related to Bacillus anthracis and Bacillus thuringiensis. Bacillus cereus is a ubiquitous soil organism and opportunistic human pathogen most commonly associated with food poisoning, causing diarrheic (late onset) or emetic (quick onset) outbreaks.
B. cereus B4264 was isolated from the blood and the pleural fluid from a case of fatal pneumonia in a male patient in 1969. Interestingly, this isolate was negative for all Laboratory Response Network (LRN) PCR assays that target pXO1 and pXO2. The isolate belongs to MLST type 89 using the MLSTDB scheme. Interestingly, this sequence type appears to be unrelated to B. anthracis. |
