| Description: |
Carsonella ruddii is a bacteriocyte-associated gamma-proteobacterial symbiont that seems to be present in all species of phloem sap-feeding insects, psyllids. Carsonella rudii (strain PV) is the symbiont of the hackberry petiole gall psyllid, Pachypsylla venusta, which has no other symbiont. The genome of Carsonella rudii (strain PV) is made up of a single circular chromosome of 159662 base pairs with a GC content of 16.5%. It contains only 182 ORFs, more than 50% of which are devoted to translation and amino acid metabolism. Genes for several categories, including cell envelope biogenesis and metabolisms of nucleotides and lipids are completely absent. The protein-coding and RNA genes cover 97.3% of the genome, which is an extremely high gene density. This is attributable to numerous ovelapping genes, 164 genes overlapping with at least one of the two adjacent ORFs. It is also interesting to note that the average length of Carsonella ORFs is shorter than in other bacteria. |
