HAMAP: Clavibacter michiganensis subsp. michiganensis (strain NCPPB 382) complete proteome
General information

Species:  Clavibacter michiganensis subsp. michiganensis (strain NCPPB 382)
Species code: CLAM3
Taxonomy: Bacteria; Actinobacteria; Actinobacteridae; Actinomycetales; Micrococcineae; Microbacteriaceae; Clavibacter (TaxID: 443906) [NEWT/ NCBI]
Description: Clavibacter michiganensis subsp. michiganensis is plant-pathogenic actinomycete that causes bacterial wilt and canker of tomato. Its genome is made up of a single circular chromosome of 3298 Mb with a high GC content and two circular plasmids pCM1 and pCM2 of 27.4 and 70 kilobases, respectively. The plasmids have a lower GC content and are essential for virulence.

C. michiganensis subsp. michiganensis lacks complete insertion elements and transposons and has only 26 pseudogenes, half of which are within or associated with low GC regions.

Infection of tomato by C. michiganensis subsp. michiganensis occurs through wounds and stomata or by infection of seeds, leading to a systemic infection that culminates in wilt and canker.

Latent infections with no or mild symptoms can also occur and plants with latent infections can be the source of seed contamination, which is the major cause of C. michiganensis subsp. michigansensis infection outbreaks.

Inside the plant, the bacterium resides in the slightly acidic, nutrient-poor xylem fluid. Survival in soil for long periods of time is possible only when the bacterium is associated with plant debris.
