| Description: |
Cyanobacteria are oxygenic, phototrophic organisms. They encode two photosystems (PSI and PSII) releasing electrons from water and fix carbon dioxide via the Calvin-Benson-Bassham pathway. Thus they absorb large quantities of C(O)2 and produce (O)2. Some cyanobacteria are also able to fix (N)2.
An aerobic, unicellular, diazotrophic cyanobacterium, Cyanothece sp. ATCC 51142 was isolated from an intertidal ares in Texas (as isolate BH68). As an organism that is both photosynthetic (producing oxygen) and nitrogen fixing it has to solve the problem that the N(2)-fixing enzyme, nitrogenase, is highly sensitive to oxygen. It has developed a temporal regulation in which N(2) fixation and photosynthesis occur at different times throughout a diurnal cycle with very high levels of CO(2) fixation during the light and high levels of N(2) fixation in the dark. It produces and consumes high quantities of inclusion bodies, including those for the products of photosynthesis (glycogen) and nitrogen fixation (cyanophycin). It is one the very rare cyanobacteria to encode a phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase which performs the first step of gluconeogenesis. This enzyme links carbon, organic acid and amino acid metabolism. Interestingly it has the first linear chromosome seen in cyanobacteria (adapted from PubMed 18812508). |
