Description:	Cyanobacteria are oxygenic, phototrophic organisms. They encode two photosystems (PSI and PSII) releasing electrons from water and fix carbon dioxide via the Calvin-Benson-Bassham pathway. Thus they absorb large quantities of C(O)2 and produce (O)2. Some cyanobacteria are also able to fix (N)2. Cyanothece sp. PCC 7424 is a unicellular cyanobacterium isolated from rice fields in Senegal in 1972. Cyanothece 7424 cells are non-motile, oblong, 5-8 um in length without gas vesicules. These cells have the ability to store the products of both photosynthesis (glycogen) and anaerobic nitrogen fixation (cyanophycin) as intracellular inclusion bodies. Additionally this strain appears to be able to make poly(3-hydroxyalkanoate) (PHA), which could be used to produce biodegradable plastics. Unlike some other Cyanothece strains, Cyanothece 7424 appears to be an obligate autotroph.
