HAMAP: Helicobacter pylori (strain B38) complete proteome
General information

Species:  Helicobacter pylori (strain B38)
Species code: HELPB
Taxonomy: Bacteria; Proteobacteria; Epsilonproteobacteria; Campylobacterales; Helicobacteraceae; Helicobacter (TaxID: 592205) [NEWT/ NCBI]
Description: Micro-aerophilic, Gram-negative, slow-growing, spiral-shaped and flagellated organism. H.pylori is probably the most common cause of chronic bacterial infection of humans, present in almost half of the world population. The presence of the bacterium in the gastric mucosa is associated with chronic active gastritis and is implicated in more severe gastric diseases, including chronic atrophic gastritis, peptic ulceration and mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphomas.

B38 was isolated from the gastric mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue of a 62-year-old Frenchman; thus it is referred to as a MALT strain. Evolution of MALT strains to malignancy only occurs in about 1% of infected patients. The strain is mildly inflammatory and can colonize mouse (and human) gastric mucosa. It lacks a cag-pathogenicity island, a functional cytotoxin and 4 genes encoding the major adhesion factors for gastric epithelial cells. In comparison with other characterized pro-inflammatory H.pylori it is missing all known pathogenic determinants but is still associated with gastric neoplasia (adapted from PMID 20537153).
