HAMAP: Helicobacter pylori (strain G27) complete proteome
General information

Species:  Helicobacter pylori (strain G27)
Species code: HELPG
Taxonomy: Bacteria; Proteobacteria; Epsilonproteobacteria; Campylobacterales; Helicobacteraceae; Helicobacter (TaxID: 563041) [NEWT/ NCBI]
Description: Micro-aerophilic, Gram-negative, slow-growing, spiral-shaped and flagellated organism. H.pylori is probably the most common cause of chronic bacterial infection of humans, present in almost half of the world population. The presence of the bacterium in the gastric mucosa is associated with chronic active gastritis and is implicated in more severe gastric diseases, including chronic atrophic gastritis, peptic ulceration and mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphomas.

Strain G27 was originally isolated from an endoscopy patient in Tuscany, Italy, and has been used extensively in H. pylori research. It is readily transformable and thus amenable to gene disruption. In addition, it efficiently delivers the translocated effector protein CagA to cells in culture, facilitating the analysis of this important virulence factor.
Properties: Presence of flagella: Yes
Human pathogen: Yes
Interaction: Animal commensal in Mammalia; Animal pathogen in Mammalia
Number of membranes: 2
Number of inteins:0
Statistics: Number of HELPG entries in the UniProt Knowledgebase: 1501 (233 in UniProtKB/Swiss-Prot + 1268 in UniProtKB/TrEMBL)
