| Description: |
Lysinibacillus sphaericus strain C3-41, formerly known as Bacillus sphaericus C3-41, is an aerobic, mesophilic, spore-forming bacterium. It is widely used in China as a commercial larvicide in the control of mosquito larvae (under the name JianBao, JianBao Co., Foshan City, China). Its mosquitocidal properties are mainly due to the binary toxin genes binA and binB which form crystal inclusions during sporulation, although it also encodes 3 mosquitocidal toxins (mtx1 is probably a pseudogene), a sphaericolysin and sevedral other pathogenesis-related genes such as haemolysins. It belongs to flagellar serotype H5a5b, is unable to metabolize polysaccharides probably due to lack of transporters and key enzymes but can metabolize a wide variety of other organic compounds and amino acids. |
