| Species code: | METTP |
| Taxonomy: | Archaea; Euryarchaeota; Methanomicrobia; Methanosarcinales; Methanosaetaceae; Methanosaeta (TaxID: 349307) [NEWT/ NCBI] |
| Description: | Methanosaeta thermophila (Methanothrix thermophila) is an anaerobic and thermophilic bacterium present in many environments, such as anaerobic digesters, anaerobic biofilms, sediments, and anaerobic sludges. M. thermophila can metabolize acetate into methane by reducing the methyl group to CH4 with electrons derived from oxidation of the carbonyl group to CO2. It could be useful as a producer of biofuels. |
