| Description: | Neisseria meningitidis is a gram-negative bacterium that colonizes the mucosal surface of the human nose and throat, usually as a commensal bacterium. Up to 15% of the human population are asymptomatic carriers. Sometimes the strains can invade the host, causing life-threatening invasive bacterial infections especially in young infants. They do so by gaining access to the blood and to the cerebrospinal fluid to cause meningitis and septicemia. Thus it is a major cause of morbidity and mortality. N.meningitidis serogroup C strain FAM18 was isolated from a child suffering from meningitis in the 1980s, and is still capable of infection. It is part of a N.meningitides complex that has caused meningococcal outbreaks over the last century. Comparisons with a serogroup A strain (Z2491, NEIMA) and a serogroup B strain (MC58, NEIMB) provide information about the means by which genetic variation of surface structures are generated. This variation is probably important for avoidance of the immune system, and in N.memingitidis is provided by a combination of DNA uptake and recombination, mobile genetic elements, repeat arrays and phase variation. |
