| Description: |
Parabacteroides distasonis (also known as Bacteroides distasonis) is a member of the normal distal human gut microbiota. The distal gut microbiota contain more bacterial cells than all of our body's other microbial communities combined. More than 90% of phylogenetic types belong to two divisions, the Bacteroidetes and the Firmicutes, with the remaining types distributed among eight other divisions. P. distasonis has the smallest genome among the sequenced human gut-associated Bacteroidetes, the smallest repertoire of genes involved in environmental sensing and gene regulation and the smallest number of genes associated with carbon source degradation. It lacks many accessory hemicellulases, pectinases and polysaccharidases that target non-plant carbohydrates. |
