Description: Pelobacter propionicus (strain DSM 2379) is an anaerobic bacteria phylogenetically associated with the delta subdivision of the Proteobacteria. This species is ubiquitous in both marine and fresh water, and in anaerobic sedmiments. It is able to convert the unsaturated hydrocarbon acetylene to acetate and ethanol via acetylaldehyde as an intermediate. Pelobacter may survive in some sediments as an Fe(III) or elemental sulfur reducer as well as growing fermentatively as an ethanol-oxidizing acetogen. Organisms that can completely oxidize organic acids with Fe(III) serving as the sole electron acceptor are responsible for most of the oxidation of organic matter in anaerobic sediments.
