Description: Gram-negative nitrogen-fixing bacteria living in soil and able to establish a symbiosis with host plants from the genera Lotus, Anthyllis and Lupinus leading to the formation of nodules on roots. Nodulation and nitrogen fixation genes of Mesorhizobium loti are encoded on the chromosome of the bacterium.
