Salmonella is a Gram-negative bacterium, a cylindrical rod of size about 2 microns by 0.5 microns. Salmonella Paratyphi B causes enteric fever in humans; the disease closely resembles typhoid fever, which is caused by the related serovar Salmonella Typhi. Salmonella Paratyphi B multiplies in the gastrointestinal tract of humans, penetrates the intestinal mucosa and is transferred to deeper tissues such as the liver and spleen where it survives in macrophages. The incubation period is 7 to 14 days, and the patient is often seriously ill with symptoms including fever, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. The disease has a prolonged course of 3 to 4 weeks, unless antibiotic therapy is used.
Salmonella Paratyphi B is host-specialized, for it grows well and causes disease only in humans, who usually acquire it by ingestion human-fecally contaminated water or food. This specific strain of S. Paratyphi was isolated from the stool of a woman in Penang, Malaysia. It can be obtained from the Salmonella Genetic Stock Center as SGSC4150.
