| Description: |
Gram-positive nonmotile coccus that grows in aerobic and anaerobic conditions, in which it forms grape-like clusters. Staphylococcus aureus is one of the major causes of community- acquired and hospital-acquired infections. It produces numerous toxins including superantigens that cause unique disease entities such as toxic-shock syndrome and staphylococcal scarlet fever. Staphylococcus aureus subsp. aureus (strain NCTC 8325) is generally regarded as the prototypical strain for all genetic manipulation. A large number of strains in general lab use are derived from NCTC 8325, including RN4220 which has been cured of all known prophage, and ISP479C and SH1000, which are derived from 8325-4 (another derivative of NCTC 8325). |
