| HAMAP: Streptococcus pneumoniae serotype 19F (strain G54) complete proteome |
| Species code: | STRP4 |
| Taxonomy: | Bacteria; Firmicutes; Lactobacillales; Streptococcaceae; Streptococcus (TaxID: 512566) [NEWT/ NCBI] |
| Description: | Streptococci are non-motile, Gram-positive cocci with widely varying pathogenic potential that occur in pairs or chains. Streptococcus pneumoniae is the most common bacterial cause of acute respiratory infection and otitis media, and is estimated to result in over 1 millions deaths in children, the elderly, debilitated and immunosuppressed people every year. Since 1990 the number of penicillin-resistant strains has increased and many strains are now resistant to commonly prescribed antibiotics such as penicillin, macrolides and fluoroquinones. Strain G54 is a Italian clinical isolate resistant to macrolides and tetracycline. It was sequenced as a draft genome in 2001 and has been recently completed. Miltilocus sequence typing has identified this strain as serogroup 15, but the capsular locus is serotype 19F, indicating the strain has probably undergone transformation. |
