| Species code: | SYNWW |
| Taxonomy: | Bacteria; Firmicutes; Clostridia; Clostridiales; Syntrophomonadaceae; Syntrophomonas (TaxID: 335541) [NEWT/ NCBI] |
| Description: | Syntrophomonas wolfei subsp. wolfei is an anaerobic bacterium that a-oxidizes short-chain saturated fatty acids, four to eight carbons in length, to acetate, propionate (from odd-numbered fatty acids), and H2 only when grown in coculture with H2-using bacteria such as methanogens. S.wolfei subsp. wolfei was the first syntroph found to grow on butyrate. |
