case <OC:Gammaproteobacteria>
FUNCTIONA key translational regulator that binds mRNA to regulate translation initiation and/or mRNA stability. Mediates global changes in gene expression, shifting from rapid growth to stress survival by linking envelope stress, the stringent response and the catabolite repression systems. Usually binds in the 5'-UTR; binding at or near the Shine-Dalgarno sequence prevents ribosome-binding, repressing translation, binding elsewhere in the 5'-UTR can activate translation and/or stabilize the mRNA. Its function is antagonized by small RNA(s).
else
FUNCTIONA translational regulator that binds mRNA to regulate translation initiation and/or mRNA stability. Usually binds in the 5'- UTR at or near the Shine-Dalgarno sequence preventing ribosome-binding, thus repressing translation. Its main target seems to be the major flagellin gene, while its function is anatagonized by FliW.
end case
SUBUNITHomodimer; the beta-strands of each monomer intercalate to form a hydrophobic core, while the alpha-helices form wings that extend away from the core.
SUBCELLULAR LOCATIONCytoplasm.
SIMILARITYBelongs to the CsrA/RsmA family.

Comments The ancestral operon is thought to be Fliw-CsrA, where CsrA is dedicated to controlling flagellar assembly and motility. Rounds of gene loss and re-acquisition in Gammaproteobacteria have lead to CsrA being repurposed for a larger role in translation control. See PubMed:25833324, Vakulskas et al., Microbiol. Mol. Biol. Rev. 79:193-224(2015) for a review.
