Protein name
RecName: Full=Membrane protein insertase YidC;
AltName: Full=Foldase YidC;
AltName: Full=Membrane protein YidC;
AltName: Full=Membrane integrase YidC;
Gene name yidC
FUNCTION: Required for the insertion and/or proper folding and/or complex formation of integral membrane proteins into the membrane. Involved in integration of membrane proteins that insert both dependently and independently of the Sec translocase complex, as well as at least some lipoproteins. Aids folding of multispanning membrane proteins (By similarity).

case <OC:Cyanobacteria> and not <OC:Gloeobacter>
FUNCTION: Probably also aids protein insertion, folding and/or assembly of membrane complexes destined for the thylakoid (By similarity).
end case

SUBUNIT: Interacts with the Sec translocase complex via SecD. Specifically interacts with transmembrane segments of nascent integral membrane proteins during membrane integration (By similarity).

case not defined <Property:Membrane> or <Property:Membrane=1>
SUBCELLULAR LOCATION: Cell membrane; Multi-pass membrane protein (By similarity).

else case <Property:Membrane=2>
SUBCELLULAR LOCATION: Cell inner membrane; Multi-pass membrane protein (By similarity).
end case

SIMILARITY: Belongs to the OXA1/ALB3/YidC family. Type 1 subfamily.

Scope: Bacteria
Fusion: Nter: <PDZ/DHR>; Cter: None
Duplicate: None
Plasmid encoded: None
Comments: N-terminal PDZ/DHR fused in RHOBA. TIGR03593 describes a large N- terminal domain of unknown function not found in all members. In most Firmicutes (MF_01811), this protein is much shorter and is probably a lipoprotein. Chlamydiae have been annotated as lipoproteins. Streptomyces seem to only have 3 transmembrane helices.
