FUNCTION | Involved in the binding and/or turnover of quinones at the Q(B) site of photosystem II (PSII). PSII is a light-driven water plastoquinone oxidoreductase, using light energy to abstract electrons from H(2)O, generating a proton gradient subsequently used for ATP formation. |
SUBUNIT | PSII is composed of 1 copy each of membrane proteins PsbA, PsbB, PsbC, PsbD, PsbE, PsbF, PsbH, PsbI, PsbJ, PsbK, PsbL, PsbM, PsbT, PsbX, PsbY, PsbZ, Psb30/Ycf12, peripheral proteins PsbO, CyanoQ (PsbQ), PsbU, PsbV and a large number of cofactors. It forms dimeric complexes. |
SUBCELLULAR LOCATION | Cellular thylakoid membrane; Single-pass membrane protein. |
SIMILARITY | Belongs to the PsbX family. Type 2 subfamily. |

Comments | PsbX is not found in Viridiplantae, is found in some but not all other photosynthetic eukaryotes. There are 2 PsbX subfamilies; this one and a shorter one found in some other cyanobacteria. The characterized proteins (Synechocystis, Thermosynechococcus elongatus) belongs to the other subfamily. |
