| case not <OC:Chlamydiia> | |
| FUNCTION | Forms membrane-associated dynamic filaments that are essential for cell shape determination. Acts by regulating cell wall synthesis and cell elongation, and thus cell shape. A feedback loop between cell geometry and MreB localization may maintain elongated cell shape by targeting cell wall growth to regions of negative cell wall curvature. |
| else case <OC:Chlamydiia> | |
| FUNCTION | Essential for growth and cell division. MreB is one of the last proteins recruited to the nascent chlamydial divisome and it is necessary for the formation of septal peptidoglycan rings. |
| end case | |
| SUBUNIT | Forms polymers. |
| SUBCELLULAR LOCATION | Cytoplasm. Note=Membrane-associated. |
| SIMILARITY | Belongs to the FtsA/MreB family. |

| Comments | In rod-shaped (elongated) bacteria, MreB is primarily a morphogenetic protein that determines cell shape. In Chlamydiia, which is naturally spherical (coccoid), MreB has been co-opted to function mainly in cell division. |
