Function | NDH-1 shuttles electrons from NADH, via FMN and iron-sulfur (Fe-S) centers, to quinones in the respiratory chain. The immediate electron acceptor for the enzyme in this species is believed to be ubiquinone. Couples the redox reaction to proton translocation (for every two electrons transferred, four hydrogen ions are translocated across the cytoplasmic membrane), and thus conserves the redox energy in a proton gradient. |
Catalytic activity | RHEA:57888: a quinone + 5 H(+)(in) + NADH = a quinol + 4 H(+)(out) + NAD(+) |
Subunit | NDH-1 is composed of 13 different subunits. Subunits NuoB, CD, E, F, and G constitute the peripheral sector of the complex. |

Comments | This family is specific for the nuoC-nuoD fusion found in the Alpha-, Beta-, Gamma- and some Deltaproteobacteria. The nuoCD fusion protein found in the Aquificae, Bacteroidetes, some other Delta- and Epsilonproteobacteria is different enough that it seems to be another subfamily (MF_01397). The Geobacter, SYNC1 and SYNFM nuoBCD fusion proteins are also members of this family. The individual families are MF_01357 (nuoC) and MF_01358 (nuoD). In many bacteria there are both the individual and fused versions. 14 proteins form the NDH-1 complex in most bacteria, there are at least 15 subunits in cyanobacteria and chloroplasts. PARDE and THET8 are annotated with another nomenclature. |
