FUNCTION | The heterodimer acts as both an ATP-dependent DNA helicase and an ATP-dependent, dual-direction single-stranded exonuclease. Recognizes the chi site generating a DNA molecule suitable for the initiation of homologous recombination. The AddB subunit has 5' -> 3' nuclease activity but not helicase activity. |

COFACTOR | Name=[4Fe-4S] cluster; Xref=ChEBI:CHEBI:49883; Note=Binds 1 [4Fe-4S] cluster.; |
end case | |
COFACTOR | Name=Mg(2+); Xref=ChEBI:CHEBI:18420; |
SUBUNIT | Heterodimer of AddA and AddB. |
MISCELLANEOUS | Despite having conserved helicase domains, this subunit does not have helicase activity. |
SIMILARITY | Belongs to the helicase family. AddB/RexB type 1 subfamily. |

Comments | Two related subfamiles of this protein exist; addB in Bacillus and Staphylococcus (this family), and rexB in Lactobacillus and Streptococcus (MF_01453). In most Lactobacillales there is no 4Fe-4S center; this has been suggested (PubMed:19129187) to occur in organisms which inhabit a low-iron environment. Not all members match the uvrD_helicase profiles (PS51198 and PS51217). |
