FUNCTION | Catalyzes the synthesis of carbamoyl phosphate from ATP, ammonium and bicarbonate. Proceeds via a three-step mechanism, i.e. the phosphorylation of hydrogencarbonate to carboxyphosphate, a nucleophilic attack of ammonia on carboxyphosphate yielding carbamate, and the phosphorylation of carbamate forming carbamoyl phosphate. |
CATALYTIC ACTIVITY | Reaction=2 ATP + hydrogencarbonate + NH4(+) = 2 ADP + carbamoyl phosphate + 2 H(+) + phosphate; Xref=Rhea:RHEA:18029, ChEBI:CHEBI:15378, ChEBI:CHEBI:17544, ChEBI:CHEBI:28938, ChEBI:CHEBI:30616, ChEBI:CHEBI:43474, ChEBI:CHEBI:58228, ChEBI:CHEBI:456216; EC=6.3.4.16; PhysiologicalDirection=left-to-right; Xref=Rhea:RHEA:18030; |
COFACTOR | Name=Mg(2+); Xref=ChEBI:CHEBI:18420; Name=Mn(2+); Xref=ChEBI:CHEBI:29035; Note=Binds 2 magnesium or manganese ions per subunit |
SIMILARITY | Belongs to the small carbamoyl-phosphate synthase family. |
