case <OC:Metazoa> or <OC:Amoebozoa>
FUNCTIONSuccinyl-CoA synthetase functions in the citric acid cycle (TCA), coupling the hydrolysis of succinyl-CoA to the synthesis of either ATP or GTP and thus represents the only step of substrate-level phosphorylation in the TCA. The alpha subunit of the enzyme binds the substrates coenzyme A and phosphate, while succinate binding and specificity for either ATP or GTP is provided by different beta subunits.
CATALYTIC ACTIVITY Reaction=CoA + GTP + succinate = GDP + phosphate + succinyl-CoA; Xref=Rhea:RHEA:22120, ChEBI:CHEBI:30031, ChEBI:CHEBI:37565, ChEBI:CHEBI:43474, ChEBI:CHEBI:57287, ChEBI:CHEBI:57292, ChEBI:CHEBI:58189; EC=6.2.1.4;

PATHWAYCarbohydrate metabolism; tricarboxylic acid cycle; succinate from succinyl-CoA (ligase route): step 1/1.
case <OC:Vertebrata>
SUBUNITHeterodimer of an alpha and a beta subunit. Different beta subunits determine nucleotide specificity. Together with the ATP- specific beta subunit @gn(SUCLA2), forms an ADP-forming succinyl-CoA synthetase (A-SCS). Together with the GTP-specific beta subunit @gn(SUCLG2) forms a GDP-forming succinyl-CoA synthetase (G-SCS).

else
SUBUNITHeterodimer of an alpha and a beta subunit.
end case
SUBCELLULAR LOCATIONMitochondrion.
SIMILARITYBelongs to the succinate/malate CoA ligase alpha subunit family.
case not <AnyFeature:TransitM>
MISCELLANEOUSThis protein may be expected to contain an N-terminal transit peptide but none has been predicted.
